The research project was aimed at studying the application of the Medium Voltage Direct Current distribution system to large all electric cruise ships. This innovative technology seems to be the future of the integrated power systems for ships endowed with electric propulsion, due to several relevant advantages over the AC distribution systems. Anyhow, several issues still prevent its successful adoption onboard. During this research project, all the main ship’s subsystems have been analyzed, and all the issues in single subsystem and in their integration have been studied. The presence in the research team of Fincantieri SpA permitted to focus the research on a less theoretical point of view, leading to results useful for a future application of the MVDC distribution technology onboard cruise ships.
